(4) Comment The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad, about 30 km from the heart of Hyderabad, commenced commercial operations on Sunday, with the landing of Lufthansa flight LH 753 from Frankfurt. The 276 passengers and crewmembers onboard the flight were given a grand welcome at the new airport.
United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi inaugurated the airport on March 14.
The Rs 2,470 crore (Rs 24.70 billion) airport is spread over 5,400 acre of land and has the longest runway in Asia at 4.26 km. The 76-year-old Begumpet airport has now been shut down.
The 75-metre high air traffic control tower at the airport is also the tallest in India.
