Now, a Drug Claims to Aid Smoking Cessation!

Here is good news for those who want to kick the smoking habit as a new drug claims to help smokers overcome their addiction. Unlike other smoking cessation solutions that work only on controlling the withdrawal symptoms, Champix - a drug by Pfizer — reduces withdrawal symptoms and smoker’s sense of satisfaction derived from smoking, says its manufacturer.

“Both nicotine (found in cigarettes and responsible for addiction to smoking) and Varenicline act on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the brain, which is associated with the addictive effects of nicotine,” says Dr Sajeela Maini, a Delhi-based smoking cessation therapist. “When the varenicline binds to these receptors it releases levels of dopamine that are required for normal functioning of the body.

Hence, it reduces the craving to smoke and eases the withdrawal symptoms,” she says. The unique drug researched and developed by Pfizer helps people to overcome smoking addiction, said Maini.

Briefing the use of such drugs on a person’s habit, she says, “When the binding of nicotine to receptors is blocked by Varenicline, nicotine is unable to activate these receptors and cannot stimulate the release of dopamine - which produces the sense of satisfaction or pleasure and motivation in smokers. Hence it reduces both the craving to smoke and dependence on smoking to feel good.

” According to a survey conducted by World health Organisation (WHO), in India alone, 5500 youths succumb to tobacco addiction daily.

Why men are most active sexually from late 20s

If you think men can simply ignore their biological clock, think again as a new study shows that their fertility is just as susceptible to the effects of time as that of women.

A French study of over 12,200 couples having fertility treatment suggests the chance of a successful pregnancy falls when the man is aged over 35.

The quality of sperm begins to deteriorate in the mid-thirties and by the time a man is 45, one in three pregnancies end in miscarriage regardless of the age of the mother, the study says.

The researchers studied couples who had sought treatment for infertility at the Eylau Centre for Assisted Reproduction in Paris between January 2002 and December 2006.

All were given intrauterine inseminations (IUI), also known as artificial insemination, where sperm is inserted into the womb when the woman is ovulating.

It is given to couples where the woman has no fertility problems and is less invasive than IVF.

The men’s sperm were examined for quantity, their ability to move and swim and their size and shape. Rates of pregnancy, miscarriage and births were recorded.

In addition, the researchers analysed detailed data on the pregnancies, which allowed them to pinpoint factors associated with the man and the woman.

As expected, maternal age had an effect in women over 35, who had a significantly higher chance of miscarriage and lower rate of pregnancy.

But the team also found that, where the father was in his late 30s, miscarriages were more common than if the man was younger. And if a man was over 40, the chances of a successful pregnancy were even lower.

The report has left experts arguing about how far modern lifestyles are to blame for failing sperm.

The study says it is not just the ability to have children that may or may not be affected by environmental factors.

Stephanie Belloc, lead author of the study, said: ‘Until now, gynaecologists only focus on maternal age, and the message was to get pregnant before the age of 35 or 38 because afterwards it would be difficult. But now the gynaecologists must also focus on paternal age and give this information to the couple.”

According to the study, men’s sexual peak is at 22, at least in terms of testosterone.

After that, levels of the male hormone fall by around one per cent a year, with the amount of bio-available testosterone halving between the ages of 25 and 75, according to the study published in The Independent.

‘But peak hormones don’t necessarily mean peak sexual performance,’ says psychotherapist Michael Perring.

Peak sexual performance, he says, is obviously closely associated with environmental factors, including availability of partners.

‘That’s why men today are most active sexually from their late twenties, and still want to enjoy flings well into their thirties, when women their age look for a permanent relationship.’

Long Drives, Mobile Use Can Cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Researchers at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas have found that hours in the car can cause carpal tunnel syndrome and that the risk increases if the motorist talks on cell phone while driving.

“Repeated, prolonged gripping of anything-whether it’s a steering wheel or a tool-can contribute to carpal tunnel syndrome,” said Jennifer Valle, occupational therapist and certified hand therapist, Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.

“There are activities you can do and modifications you can make to help alleviate the risk of developing carpal tunnel,” she added.

Following are some tips to ease the problem:

- Switch the hand you drive with-periodically using your left, then your right.

- Keep your hand in line with your elbow and your wrist straight.

“If you imagine the steering wheel as a clock, the best position to put your wrist in would actually be at three o’clock and nine o’clock,” Valle said.

According to experts, most people who have already developed carpal tunnel symptoms can reverse them by making simple changes.

“A lot of times patients will come back and say ‘I’m having fewer symptoms,’ and that the activity modifications are working,” Valle said.

Drivers also increase their risk of carpal tunnel-they talk on their cell phone while driving-holding it with their wrist bent.

Experts suggest that one must use an earpiece or headset to overcome this problem.

Meet the Brit man who is turning into a woman - naturally!

A Brit man is seeking help from medical experts after he started turning into a woman naturally.

Pub singer Terry Wright started losing his hair and beard ten years ago and since then he has developed smooth skin, hot flushes and boobs.

The father-of-five has revealed that kids living nearby make fun him by calling him ‘She-Man’.

According to his blood tests, the 60-year-old has abnormally high levels of the female hormone oestrogen.

And doctors who have examined him say that they have never seen such a case - and do not know what to do to reverse the process.

Wright, of Birmingham, is now begging medical experts to help him.

“I am a man, not a woman. And I do not want to be a woman. I just want to get my life back to normal,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

“Doctors call me an ‘interesting case’ and ‘unique’ but I just want to go back to being a proper man.

“I get mocked by kids where I live who call me She-Man and other names. Once a child bumped into me and its mother said, ‘Say sorry to the lady.’ My mates are shocked at my appearance but try to make light of it by saying I’m just a pretty-looking man,” he added.

A psychiatrist has judged him mentally sound and an MRI scan ruled out the oestrogen surge being caused by a tumour.

Facts About Oral Cancer!

Oral cancer is one of the few forms of cancer that has not experienced a significantly deceased mortality rate in the last 30 years. Deaths from oral cancer are higher than from cervical, testicular or thyroid cancer. It is estimated that more than 340,000 Indians will develop oral cancer in 2009 and that one Indian dies of this disease every hour of the day. The five year survival rate for oral cancer is approximately 50 percent, but early detection can result in survival rates of 80 percent or higher. The ideal opportunity for early detection of cancerous or pre-cancerous growths is during the annual hygiene examination. Unfortunately, the cellular changes that lead to oral cancer start below the surface of the epithelium at the basement membrane, making them difficult to detect by conventional screening methods.

The annual hygiene exam should basically comprise of traditional incandescent light examinations to enhance the visualization of oral mucosal abnormalities that may not be visible to the naked eye, such as oral cancer or pre-malignant dysplasia. There have been scientific breakthroughs in the world of dentistry giving them more accurate devices to detect oral cancer. The devices are portable and can be used by hygienists or dentists themselves and the examination takes only one or two minutes. The oral cancer detection devices use fluorescence visualization technology resulting in abnormal tissue appearing irregular, dark areas that stand out against the otherwise normal, green fluorescence pattern of surrounding healthy tissue.

This significant advancement in early detection is very easy for the dental staff to administer and completely non-invasive for the patient. It takes very little time, is pain-free, and involves no distasteful rinses or staining. In addition, the cost to the patient for oral cancer screening is covered by most of the insurance companies.
