It is very sad to see such big adds in news papers and other medias that lasers can do all most all the dental procedures. I have read a lot of articles recently that lasers can be used in Root Canal Treatment and other hard tissue procedures. I happened to visit AIMS at new Delhi which is Pioneer institute of India and i was informed by the Head of the institute that they had done lot of work with lasers and finally it was stated that it mere failure in dental hard tissue procedures. It is affective in soft tissue management and little in bleaching procedures. Pain less procedures can be done by achieving proper anesthesia and not just only lasers are the solution.

Do not just carried away with these adds.

In lasers there r two types one is soft tissue laser- Nd yag , other one is ERBIUM YAG hard tissue laser.with soft tissue laser can do surgeries on soft tissue like gums and skin.with hard tissue laser can be used for surgeries on bone and teeth. pain in rooth canal treatment occurs only because of pulp remenents and granaulation tissue. where as the as soon as rct is opened 200 micron laser tip is placed in root canal . which cauterizes the pulp and granulation tissue(infection).once the pulp and infection is removed then u can expand the canal with protaper . It is higly efective in pereodontal surgeries , oral sub mucous fibrosis treatment, apthous and herpes ulcer, tooth fillings, desensitizing treatment, hemangioma removal ,fibroma removal, teeth whitening,bone surgeries. AIMS is great hospital but unfortunaly dental wing is not fulfledged they dont have oral and maxillofacial surgery. they dont conduct any surgeries there they have only orthodontics and prosthodontic dept which r nothing to with surgerydont please specify the doctor whom u have aproached in AIMS. even in eye surgery many senior doctors have not accepted lasers initially . but today almost every eye surgeon is using laser instead of traditional knife for surgeries.
