Medical Art and Animation

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 24 April, 2008 (1) Comment

Medical visualization is a universal term that encompasses everything from Medical illustration to 3D Medical Animation and Imaging. Technology driven Medical Illustrators use their artistic skills to produce some of the finest breath taking visualizations. The profession is far more challenging, they just don’t draw detailed anatomical illustrations but translate, visualize, and convey complex scientific information in order to educate anyone from doctors to the general public. If you have ever opened a science textbook, watched a pharma ad, heard of Gray’s Anatomy, or been to a doctor’s office, then you’ve probably witnessed some form of the medical illustration.

Take a look at some of the exciting and dynamic illustrations i managed to collect all these days. Do leave your feedback and ask me about Biomedical Visualization program, there are very few universities offering this program.

Pedophilia

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 19 April, 2008 (6) Comment

Pedophilia is the most widely and intensely repudiated of the paraphilias. Pedophiles are men who erotically and romantically prefer children or young adolescents. They are grouped into categories depending on their erotic preferences for boys or girls and for very young, young, or pubertal children. Some pedophiles have highly age-and sex-specific tastes; others are less discriminating. Because the diagnosis of pedophilia requires that for a period of at least 6 months there are recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child or children, the disorder should not be expected to be present in every person who is guilty of child molestation. Some intrafamilial child abuse occurs more quickly and results from combinations of deteriorated marriages, sexual deprivation, sociopathy, and substance abuse. Child molestation, whether paraphilic or not, is a crime, however. Child molesters show several patterns of erectile responses to visual stimulation in the laboratory. Some have their greatest arousal to children of a specific age, and others respond to both children and adults. Others respond with their greatest arousal to aggressive clues.

Snoring - Learn the Facts

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 1 April, 2008 (0) Comment

Snoring results from the pharyngeal airway collapsing during inspiration. Snoring
can disrupt sleep, cause a variety of important but nonspecific symptoms, and suggest
the presence of the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, which can lead to cor pulmonale
and sudden death. Therefore, the review of systems for a child at any age should
include questions regarding snoring and breathing during sleep. Most normal children
snore at one time or another, and many, particularly those who have nasal allergies,
snore almost nightly.

Dyslexia and Reading Disorder

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 1 April, 2008 (3) Comment

This disorder of phonologic processing and decoding of words is the most common developmental language disorder. It is estimated that as many as 30% of the American urban population has reading problems. Dyslexia frequently is familial, occurring more often in sons (35% to 40% risk of occurrence) than in daughters (17% to 18% risk). The underlying deficit is impaired recognition and processing of phonemes– the most discrete elements of sound in language. Those who have dyslexia do not appreciate that speech is composed of sounds that join together to form segments, syllables, morphemes, and words. The processing of language in the course of reading or writing is constantly compromised by the struggle to decode or encode words. Preschool children who have dyslexia manifest delays in acquisition of speech, poor articulation, difficulty with learning the names of letters and colors, and persistent missequencing of syllables (eg, “aminals” for “animals”). These children experience difficulty following multistep directions. They are unable to express frustration by “using their words” and, therefore, are prone to develop secondary behaviors such as hitting, kicking, or throwing tantrums.Dyslexia can be diagnosed confidently by the end of the second grade. Children will be slow and halting in their oral reading and have difficulty in reading comprehension. They have poor word retrieval and frequently use more fillers (”um,” “like,” “you know”) in their narratives. They experience markedly increased difficulties in the fourth grade when there is a shift from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” Children must be taught to break down, or segment, syllables into phonemes. Some children whose overall cognitive abilities are high may compensate for their dyslexia and not be identified by the schools because they can maintain average grades. However, they will have persistent difficulties with spelling and written language into adulthood.

Morning Sex Keeps You Hale and Hearty

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 29 March, 2008 (0) Comment

A steamy sex session in the morning can keep you in good health, say researchers.

According to a research from Queen’s University in Belfast, a good morning session at least three times a week, decreases the risk of heart attack or stroke by half and a regular session improves circulation, thereby reducing blood pressure.

According to a study in New Scientist, a steamy session twice a week enhances IgA, an antibody that provides protection against microbes that multiply in body secretions, reports The Sun.

Morning sex also helps in alleviating arthritis and migraine. It burns around 300 calories an hour that simultaneously diminishes the risk of developing diabetes.

Moreover, an American study involving 300 sexually active women whose partners did not use condoms revealed that they were less prone to depression.

Sex increases the production of testosterone that provides stronger bones and muscles thus helping to stave off osteoporosis.

Are You Suffering with Social Phobia???

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 20 March, 2008 (3) Comment

Diagnostic Criteria for Social Phobia

A marked and persistent fear of social or performance situations in which the person is exposed to unfamiliar people or to scrutiny by others. The individual often fears that he will act in a way that will be humiliating or embarrassing.

Exposure to the feared situation almost invariably provokes anxiety, which may take the form of a panic attack.

The person recognizes that the fear is excessive or unreasonable.

The feared situations are avoided or endured with intense distress.

The avoidance, anxious anticipation, or distress in the feared situations interferes with normal functioning or causes marked distress.

The duration of symptoms is at least six months.

The fear is caused by a substance or medical condition, and is not caused by another disorder.

Treating Depression

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 20 March, 2008 (4) Comment

Depression has a 6-month prevalence of 5.8 percent and a lifetime prevalence of 17%. Three fourths of patients with depression improve with therapy.

Diagnosis: Clinical evaluation should identify characteristics of depressed mood, loss of interest in usually pleasurable activities, and history of past depression. Insomnia, hallucinations, suicidal ideation and planning, or alcohol and drug abuse should be sought. Symptoms may also include guilt feelings, thoughts of worthlessness, energy changes/fatigue, concentration/attention impairment, and appetite/weight changes.

Family history may reveal depression, suicide, or drug or alcohol abuse.

Suicide risk: The risk of suicide is higher in depressed patients who are divorced or widowed, elderly, white, male or living alone, and in those with chronic medical illness or psychotic symptoms.

Laboratory evaluation may include a complete blood cell count, chemistry panel, thyroid stimulating hormone, and glucose. An electrocardiogram is recommended if the patient is more than 40 years of age.

Prostate Cancer Analysis

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 16 March, 2008 (8) Comment

The average age at diagnosis of prostate cancer is 73 years. The age-adjusted death rate from prostate cancer has not changed appreciably in 35 years. The prevalence of prostate cancer is 30% in men over the age of 50. One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetimes.

Clinical evaluation

Some patients with prostate cancer may have obstructive urinary symptoms similar to benign prostatic hypertrophy; some patients may have weight loss and bone pain. Most patients have no symptoms, only an elevated prostate specific antigen found on routine screening.

Physical exam. Digital rectal exam is used to assess the prostate nodule for extension beyond prostate edge, firmness, fixation, or induration.

Prostate specific antigen ( PSA)
