Beginners Guide to Web Hosting
Dr. Smile 24 March, 2008 Web hosting might be an alien term for many and for others; it can be another everyday word. For beginners, Web host can be defined as a company that manages various computer servers and Web Hosting is used as a function in which the disk space on the computer/server is leased out so that you can store all those files of your website.
In short, it means that there is a computer in the data center on which your website’s files are stored and this computer will display the web pages to the visitors. If you want to create your website, web hosting is inevitable in such case.
While choosing a web host, you need to check out various specifications. This article would be your perfect guide to web hosting. The features of the package differ accordingly with the pricing. Two most important features are the amount of the disk space offered and the bandwidth limit. More disk space enables you to store larger files of your website. And in most of the cases the company permits you to host unlimited number of websites on a single web hosting account.
Bandwidth is measured in terms of traffic which is transferred to and fro from the website. So, sufficient bandwidth is required so that all the features of the website are easily accessible to the visitors. Sometimes, companies’ offers unlimited bandwidth with some restricting clauses like nature of data transferred. Websites such as discussion forums, video galleries consume huge amount of bandwidth, so make sure you choose a package accordingly. Moreover, you will have the choice of increasing the bandwidth limit anytime during your tenure with the web host.
Another important feature is the script compatibility, whether you require a Windows, UNIX or Linux server. The operating system of a server determines the choice of software for the website. These software programs are called as scripts and not all servers are script compatible. Linux servers are preferred largely due to their compatibility with PHP, SQL, Ajax, etc.
Lastly, check out if your host provides you with fantastico script, a script which can install websites very easily and efficiently in few clicks, very useful if you are a newbie. Few other options like number of databases, email accounts and the type of control panel are to be considered while buying a web host.
