The world’s Top 10 Spammers!
Dr. Smile 21 August, 2008
(2) Comment The world’s top 10 spamming countries account for 55 per cent of the total global spam volume, says Secure Computing, a public company that provides enterprise security solution, in its Internet Threats Report.
Spam is the unwanted e-mail messages that you find in your mail box. It is primarily electronic junk mail sent to your e-mail account or even your cellphone.
Spammers are continuing to use pop culture and current events (US elections, Olympics, etc) to entice end users into responding or clicking on links whose sole purpose is to download malware.
The Secure Research report says that there was a 45 per cent increase in the average number of porn sites found daily since January 2008.
50 pre cent of all Web sites’ content is now in non-English languages, and this too is adding to the growing spam volume.

Round Face Men are More Aggressive!
Dr. Smile 20 August, 2008
(1) Comment Want to gauge a man’s aggression levels? Simply look at the proportions of his face-the more rounder it is, the more aggressive he is, a new study claims.
An international team has carried out the study and found that the male sex hormone testosterone makes faces more circular and as a result a rounder face means that men tend to be more aggressive.According to researchers, the shape of the face may have been honed by evolution as a marker of the propensity for aggressive behavior though our ancestors did not pick up this warning sign.” Findings suggest that people can make accurate inferences about others’ personality traits and behavioral dispositions based on certain signals conveyed by the face,” lead researcher Prof Cheryl McCormick said.McCormick of Brock University and colleagues have based their findings on an analysis of the aggression levels of 90 sportsmen, ‘The Daily Telegraph’ reported.

Low Vitamin B12: A Hidden Cause of Diabetes Explosion in India?
Dr. Smile 16 August, 2008
(0) Comment Ask any pregnant woman and she will vouch for the Group B vitamin known as folic acid. Chances are that her doctor has explained to her how this is a proven cornerstone of good pregnancy nutrition.
But a new finding by a Pune-based diabetologist reveals that babies born to mothers with high folate levels and low vitamin B12 levels are more insulin resistant. Insulin resistance is the body’s inability to use the insulin it produces. It may be linked to obesity, hypertension and high levels of fat in the blood.
Result: A considerable contribution to the epidemic of adiposity and Type 2 diabetes in India, concludes Dr CS Yajnik, diabetologist and head of Pune KEM hospital’s diabetes unit, in a paper published in Diabetologia this January.
“We studied the association between the vitamin B12, folate and total homocysteine status during pregnancy and offspring adiposity and insulin resistance,” says Yagnik. What they found was that it led to low birthweight babies - a risk factor for Type 2 diabetes.

Happiness can add several years to your life
Dr. Smile 15 August, 2008
(0) Comment Forget long walks and calorie-controlled diets, the best way to boost lifespan is: be happy.
That’s the conclusion of a new study, which shows that being happy can add several years to life.
“Happiness does not heal, but happiness protects against falling ill,” 24.com quoted Ruut Veenhoven of Rotterdam’s Erasmus University, as saying in a study to be published next month.
After reviewing 30 studies carried out worldwide over periods ranging from one to 60 years, the Dutch professor said the effects of happiness on longevity were “comparable to that of smoking or not”.
That special flair for feeling good, he said, could lengthen life by between 7.5 and 10 years.
In Veenhoven’s findings, published in the Journal of Happiness Studies, a scientific publication founded in 2000, the strongest effect on longevity was found among a group of US nuns followed through their adult life - perhaps reflecting the feel-good factor from belonging to a close-knit stress-free community with a sense of purpose.

Looking for Heart Disease? The Eyes Have It!
Dr. Smile 12 August, 2008
(0) Comment The eyes may carry important early clues to heart disease, signaling damage to tiny blood vessels long before symptoms start to show elsewhere, researchers reported on Tuesday.
People with a type of eye damage known as retinopathy were more likely to die of heart disease over the next 12 years than those without it, according to the team at the University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne in Australia and the National University of Singapore.
They studied the retinal photographs of 3,000 people, most of whom had diabetes. Such snapshots are often taken to see if the diabetes has begun to damage the eyes. Then they checked records for deaths.
“Over 12 years, 353 participants (11.9 percent) had incident coronary heart disease-related deaths,” the researchers reported in the journal Heart.
People with retinopathy were nearly twice as likely to die of heart disease as people without it, said the team, led by the University of Sydney’s Gerald Liew.

Beijing Olympics Ready to Get Start!
Dr. Smile 2 August, 2008
(4) Comment Finally, the much sought upon Beijing Olympics 2008 is here and ready to kick start on Aug 08. The Chinese has put a tremendous amount of effort into putting on great Games for the athletes, pumping in a total of about $40 billion to stage the Games and everybody is eager to see the Games succeed in tapping into one fifth of the world’s population.
Although the Beijing Games have been hit by protests and controversy regarding China’s policies on Tibet and the Darfur region of Sudan as well as the country’s human rights record and pollution concerns, this did not reflect upon the spirit of the games. Unlike run-ups to recent Olympics, Beijing’s preparations for August have kept to plan, and some stadiums and infrastructure have even been completed ahead of schedule. All is now ready to go.
Take a look at the schedule which was made public today:
