Indian Medical tourism to earn $1.87 Bn a year by 2012

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 27 May, 2008 (4) Comment

India is set to earn Rs.80 billion ($1.87 billion) a year in foreign exchange from medical tourism by 2012, according to a study by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

With easy visa facilities to overseas patients coupled with best emerging medical infrastructure facilities, India’s medical tourism can become a lead foreign exchange earner and the earnings will grow from the existing Rs.35 billion annually to Rs.80 billion a year by 2012, Assocham president Venugopal N. Dhoot said.

The study on Prospects of Medical Tourism for Higher Forex Earning was done under the supervision of the health committee of Assocham, headed by Sir Ganga Ram Hospital chairman B.K. Rao.

“The primary reasons as to why medical tourism would flourish in India include much lower medical treatment costs for various ailments, such as bone narrow transparent, bye-pass surgery, knee surgery and liver transplant as compared to western countries,” Dhoot said in a statement Monday.

New Sensored Dentures on the Deck!

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 25 May, 2008 (2) Comment

Scientists have developed dentures fitted with sensors to reveal the tongue’s hidden movement during speech.

The sensor dentures record pressure exerted by the tongue which could enable researchers in Grenoble, France, to minimalise the speech interference of false teeth and braces, reports New Scientist.

The team claims it’s very difficult for them to know how much pressure is exerted by the tongue on the teeth while producing some speech, for example when making a ‘T’ sound.

Earlier, such measurement required the researchers to stick sensors to people’s teeth, or embedding them into an artificial palate, which actually hampered the normal functioning of the tongue.

But, to avert this problem, the French team opted to hide their sensors inside dentures made for 20 volunteers who had already lost their teeth.

They specifically designed individual devices for each patient, having one or two sensors embedded inside.

1 in 20 patients want to kill their doctors!

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 23 May, 2008 (9) Comment

They are god-sent souls who cure people and help in chasing away diseases. But what happens when a doctor becomes patronizing, especially when a person is in pain? Well, the patient feels like ‘killing him’. That’s what a new research suggests.

The urge for a patient to kill his or her doctor is apparently not uncommon, especially among patients who are in pain, undergoing physical rehabilitation or seeking legal compensation for disability.

In the research, conducted by David Fishbain and colleagues at the University of Miami, Florida, it was found that just over 1 in 20 of roughly 800 physical rehabilitation patients admitted feeling like they wanted to murder their physician.

Even amongst a control group, who were not being treated for any condition, slightly fewer than 1 in 50 said they had previously had the same urge.

Get Your Teeth Whitened at Home!

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 22 May, 2008 (5) Comment

Do you find yourself staring enviously at the smiles of Hollywood stars radiating out of entertainment magazines? You too can have a smile so brilliant. With the growing trend of teeth whitening, costs have gone down and more products have become available, making the procedure easier than ever before.

Teeth whitening, also called teeth bleaching, was once an expensive in-office procedure that only the rich and famous could afford. Fortunately for the rest of us, teeth whitening can now be done at home, with the help of a professional. Many dentists are specially trained in teeth whitening techniques. Usually, they will mold a tray fitted to your teeth. You squeeze teeth whitening gels into the trays and keep them in your mouth for a prescribed amount of time each day. Over a period of a couple weeks, your teeth will begin to shine. These teeth whitening systems may initially cost hundreds of dollars. However, once a tray has been made, it can be reused over and over again; refills of teeth whitening gels are inexpensive. And a tray made specifically for your teeth will perform better than a generic mold.

Dairy Products! Way To Periodontal Health

Posted by User ImagePeriotalk 22 May, 2008 (2) Comment

The recent article in Jol Of Peridontology reports the beneficial effects of dairy products on periodontal disease. Study Abstract. This is a interesting finding which encourages one to intake more dairy products in ones diet. Looking critically into the study we find facts that should be taken into account.

The study included a study population between age 40 through 79 years. The older population is known to have increased prevalence of periodontal disease and osteoporosis. Research has shown relationship between osteoporosis and alveolar bone loss. Decreased mineral density in body including jaw bone would leave alveolar bones more susceptible to periodontal disease.

The study included dairy products like milk, cheese, and lactic acid foods (yogurt and lactic acid drinks). Lactic acid is known to increase calcium absorption in intestine. Consumption of foods rich in lactose is bound to produce more lactic acid, lowering the local pH, bringing it to ideal level of calcium absorption. Research has shown the correlation between poor absorption, decreased intake of lactose and poor absorption of calcium, a factor which can lead to the development of osteoporosis and fractures.

Outrage over dental nurses’ ‘anti-patient’ Facebook group

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 18 May, 2008 (6) Comment

A group of dental nurses on the social network website Facebook, calling themselves ‘I’m a dental nurse and I hate patients because…’, has angered the General Dental Council (GDC).

Under the heading ‘Group Info’, the group claims it’s ‘Just for fun – Inside Jokes’ and, describing themselves, write: ‘This is a group for dental nurses who are sick of patients and their bad attitudes, their stupid comments, their bad personal hygiene and the way they assume it’s OK to burp in your face.’

It has so far netted 497 members. The GDC has pointed out that posts on the Facebook group, describing patients in derogatory terms, is in breach of GDC’s Standards for Dental Professionals.

The British Association of Dental Nurses (BADN) recommends that any UK dental nurse who is a member of the group leaves it immediately and deletes any posts they may have made, before the GDC takes action.

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 15 May, 2008 (5) Comment

Hay peeps, how you have been doing all these days? Well things weren’t so g00d at my place; scorching heat, bad health (thanks to my late night webbing) and also i was busy updating my vBulletin Dental forum, Dentocafe’s gonna wear a brand new attire too very soon!

Chetan might be waiting endlessly for his coded wordpress theme which he had won during the contest held here last month. I was pretty lazy in sending him the pack, the other 2 guys who also won the coding can still send me the PSD.

You can very well check out the Chetan’s theme HERE [The theme would look ugly on this blog because of the widgets and other customizations]

I would appreciate if Chetan leaves a coder linkback on the theme!

Learn How To Say ‘Hi’

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 15 May, 2008 (2) Comment

Dr. Mark Goulston thought himself a coward. At parties he would stand by the chip dip, never approaching people and rarely meeting anyone new. “My father was shy,” says Goulston, “so I grew up thinking that ‘assertive’ meant ‘pushy.’ ”

A psychiatrist in Santa Monica, Calif., Goulston knew all about social anxiety–and still he couldn’t beat it. Then his first child came. “I wanted to be someone my daughter would grow to look up to, and I didn’t feel at that moment that she would,” he recalls. So at the next party he and his wife attended, Goulston set a goal for himself: “to meet three new people and have them be glad to have met me.” Twenty-five years later, Goulston, 60, writes and lectures about overcoming anxiety and guides patients through the process.

Ever Heard of Healthier Smoking???

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 11 May, 2008 (2) Comment

Electronic cigarette is a healthy alternative cigarette. It feels & looks like regular cigarettes, except it contains aboslutely no tobacco and carcinogens.

I surprised to see the new modernized version of a cigarette; Electronic Cigarette is a device that simulates the functions of a cigarette without the harmful chemicals. it uses a small replacable cartridge filled with a small dose of nicotine and propylene glycol powered by a rechargable battery. When the user inhales on the device, the air flow is detected by a sensor. A microprocessor then activates an atomizer which injects tiny droplets of the liquid into the flowing air and vapourises the liquid. Each cartridge is equivalent to 5-6 regular cigarettes, and it costs less then a toonie each.

Smoking Prolongs Life!

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 10 May, 2008 (8) Comment

A new study out of the University of Western Ontario, proves that smoking actually prolongs life if one does not get cancer first.

The study that started several decades ago concluded that a person who smoked was more likely to live a longer, more healthy life if cancer is taken out of the equation.

One in three people in their lifetime will develop a cancer of some sort regardless of habit, life style and other previously thought determining factors. The study also proved that there was no significant increase in cancer from those that smoked and those that did not.

Dr. Rosely Batemarn recommends that you in fact do smoke based on these findings. She herself has taken up the habit and has given smokes to both her children, aged 9 and 14.

Smoking is still bad for children under the age of 5 as their lungs will not fully develop due to the nicotine.

Two kindergartens in Beijing were temporarily shut down Tuesday after children there showed symptoms of the disease, Xinhua said. There have been 1,482 cases in Beijing, most in kindergartens, it said.

So far, 15,799 outbreaks of the disease have been reported throughout the country this year, Xinhua said.

The Most Famous Bite Revealed!

Posted by User ImageDr. Teeth 6 May, 2008 (2) Comment

On January 15, 1978, Lisa Levy and Martha Bowman went to bed in the same room in the Chi Omega sorority house at Tallahassee’s Florida State University. No one could have guessed that this was to be their last night alive. In the dark, a man wearing a blue knit cap crept in and struck them with a wooden club until they were dead. Then he fled into the night.
A witness, Nita Neary, saw the man in the house running with a cloth-covered log, so she called the police and they came to investigate. Never had they seen such a brutal attack, and little did they know that these girls were the latest victims of serial killer Ted Bundy, who had left a wake of uncounted female corpses from Washington State to Florida. Generally he went after one at a time, but for some reason he had gone on a rampage that night.
Lisa Levy was raped, strangled, and beaten on the head. Margaret Bowman was strangled with a pair of pantyhose and severely beaten on the head. Neither had struggled. Two other girls in the house had been attacked and less than an hour and a half later, the man assaulted a fifth victim, who survived. Just a few weeks after that, he abducted, raped, and killed a 12-year-old girl.
No fingerprints were found at the crime scene, which meant that the room had been wiped clean. While that kind of precaution was consistent with Bundy’s personality, it was not hard evidence for a conviction. The attacker had taken his weapon with him so that item of evidence was also missing from the crime scene collection. They had a blood type, a few print smudges, and sperm samples, but all proved inconclusive. Yet there was a piece of evidence that was to become a centerpiece during the trial: an odd bite mark on the left buttock of Lisa Levy. She had also been bitten on the breast, but this mark on her buttock was a much better impression. One officer laid a yellow ruler against the abrasion and then stepped back for the photographers. His presence of mind might have made all the difference between conviction and acquittal of the most notorious killer in America to date, because the tissue specimens were lost by the time of the trial.
